Omar AkbarExperienced teacher
Omar has been a science Teacher for 14 years. He is author of The Unofficial Teacher’s Manual: What they don’t teach you in training and Bad School Leadership (and what to do about it). The bulk of the content of this module is based on the ideas in The Unofficial Teacher’s Manual – a very popular book amongst new teachers and an Amazon best seller with around 136 5* reviews. Omar is very active on twitter where he regularly offers support to trainees and NQTs in matters such as those outlined above. To uplift moods, Omar also makes and posts funny videos on social media, including the celebrated ‘shuffle’ dance – which went viral and made national news – as well as singing a teacher-working-from-home version of ‘Ice-ice baby.’ He believes humour and positivity are essential if one is to influence others. In Omar’s experience, teachers appreciate honesty about the profession backed by a can-do approach – both of which are apparent in his writing.
What they don’t teach you in training
Whatever your route into teaching, there are some things they just didn’t teach you and you weren’t in any school long enough to pick them up via osmosis. Teacher training courses tell you how to teach, but there is a whole other set of rules (and guidance) which will not only help you to reach your full potential as a teacher, but also help you to avoid the pitfalls which you don’t even realise exist until you’re knee-deep in them. Experienced teacher, Omar Akbar, considers strategies and tips to help you thrive in teaching.
This session will also be available on-demand, please register to receive the recording.
Recommended for all leadership and teaching staff.
