Black History Month: Discovery Education Provides Resources to Primary Schools

As schools across the UK celebrate Black History Month, Discovery Education is offering teachers a host of dynamic digital resources to help pupils recognise and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.

With a theme of ‘Saluting our Sisters’, this year’s Black History Month highlights the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities. The resources available from Discovery Education will engage pupils with these powerful stories and shine a light on key figures in the struggle for racial equality around the world.

Available via the award-winning digital learning service Discovery Education Espresso, this suite of resources has been specially curated to help pupils learn about black history and culture not just during Black History Month, but throughout the school year.

Suitable for pupils from EYFS to KS2, the resources include:

Recognising Black History: An interview with Historian and Author David Olusoga, about the importance of teaching black history in schools
Black Women in History: Special videos exploring the lives of pioneers such as Rosa Parks, Mary Seacole and NASA Mathematician Katherine Johnson
Cultural Icons: Engaging resources about cultural icons including Stormzy, Malorie Blackman and Kwame Kwei-Armah
Who Am I? Question sheets to help pupils write biographies and fact files about black pioneers
Special Assemblies: About the lives of Rosa Parks and Mary Seacole

Howard Lewis, Discovery Education’s UK and International Managing Director said:

Discovery Education is proud to support Black History Month by providing teachers with dynamic content and digital resources to bring these powerful stories into the classroom. Black history should be recognised and celebrated all year round, and our resources will help schools and teachers to do so.”

The Black History Month resources are available to Discovery Education subscriber schools via Discovery Education Espresso, the curriculum-centred daily learning platform for primary schools.
